Magic and rituals in Among the Trolls
Väki is practical magic you brew and carry: potions for dungeons and for bad Lykky. Rituals are grandfather's craft, and the spellbook is the interface that lists what you have learned.

Magic in Among the Trolls is practical: it is brewed, carried and used rather than summoned. The two words that carry the system are Väki (magic) and Lykky (luck, or more precisely the balance of a region's energies), and the store page asks you to balance them to survive.
Väki: magic as a crafted resource
Crafting is the key to progression in this game, and potions sit inside that same tree. The developers describe brewing special magical potions to help you survive dungeons, enemies and the effects of bad Lykky, and they frame the whole potion layer as a small adjustment that makes the player feel more in between the realities Anna lives in.
So Väki, in play, looks like this: recipes, ingredients, brewing, and a stock of potions you carry into places where the world stops behaving normally.
The spellbook
Public material shows a spellbook interface with spells, their descriptions and their stated casting costs. Only one spell has been named in official material so far: Conjure Rain. Treat any list beyond that as invented — the game discusses the system far more than it has published the roster.
The Väki box
The sealed box in grandfather's backpack is the story's version of the whole magic question. As a child, Anna watched him lay out the pack's contents with care — everything finding its place as if in a mysterious and perfect order — and was always told not to touch the Väki box: "not yet, Anna." He never parted from that backpack. And he left without it.
Rituals are grandfather's craft
Rituals belong to the grandfather's side of the story. In Anna's memory of the pack, it held everything needed to make a fire, build a shelter and cook — and also "special ingredients for those strange rituals only Grandfather knew about." He was a shaman; the islands' tietäjät forged the portals; the glyphs on the arches match the glyphs on Anna's bracelet.
| Practice | What it does | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Brewing potions | Survives dungeons, enemies, bad Lykky | Crafting tree |
| Spells | Cast at a stated cost (Conjure Rain is the published example) | Spellbook interface |
| Rituals | Grandfather's knowledge, tied to the old ways | Story and the tietäjät |
| Respect in hunting | Earns Mielikki's grace | Devlog material and Lykky |
Using magic well
- Brew as soon as a potion recipe is available; carry a buffer into every portal.
- Keep potions for the moment a fight or a dungeon stops being fair, not the first scratch.
- Read the spellbook's costs before you rely on a spell in a crisis.
- Treat rituals as travel and story permissions rather than combat tools.
- Watch the forest for the tell that Lykky is falling, and back off while you still can.
