Among the Trolls Guide

Swimming and the Deep Sea

Quick answer

Swimming is unnaturally exhausting, tools do not work in water, and the Deep Sea turns the world hostile. If you need another island, build the bridge.

Water in Among the Trolls is not a shortcut. Anna used to swim these waters secretly as a child; now the same water is unnaturally exhausting, the tools in her pack stop working when she is in it, and moving off the coast takes her into a Deep Sea that distorts the world on purpose.

Why swimming is a problem

The waters around the archipelago no longer behave like the sea Anna remembers. Her swimming skills count for nothing against its hostility, and the game translates that into mechanics:

  • Movement in water is slower and stamina drains quickly.
  • Pushing too hard means running out of energy and drowning.
  • Tools are useless in water — axes, bows and spears cannot be used until you are back on land.
  • Carrying a heavy load is a liability: if Anna falls in, she will have to let it go to survive.

The three waters

WaterBehaviourWhat to do
Island lakesLess dangerous than the oceanFine for short crossings and testing
Coastal shallowsSlower, tiring, still riskyUse for gathering, not travel
The Deep SeaStamina drains faster, world distorts and turns hostileDo not cross; build a bridge instead

The developers describe the Deep Sea as a true boundary, as solid as any wall: you cannot cross the open sea without a bridge, because some waters are too dangerous and must be avoided at all costs.

The Aallottaret

The danger has a name and a story. The Aallottaret are water nymphs — women who drowned, consumed by envy for the living. In grandfather's telling they grab you and drag you down without mercy, and the narrator's uncertainty is the interesting part: it is not clear whether they do it to keep people from reaching the islands, or to make sure they never leave.

Swimming safely, if you must

  1. Check the stamina meter before entering, not while inside.
  2. Prefer island lakes to the open sea, always.
  3. Drop heavy loads on shore before crossing; you cannot carry them through.
  4. Never plan a crossing without a bridge unless the distance is short enough to be trivial.
  5. Treat a darkening, distorting horizon as a wall, not a challenge.

Why the water matters to the story

The water is part of the game's larger argument that the world has gone wrong. The same shore where Anna swam in secret as a child is now hostile, and the game's survival design points the player at the honest solution: build, prepare, and do not trust the sea.
