Among the Trolls Guide

Sisu: death and recovery in Among the Trolls

Quick answer

Dying to an enemy plays the cutscene that explains Sisu, the Finnish concept the game uses for endurance. Read it before you plan a long expedition.

A dark stone room with a figure lit by glowing eyes

Dying in Among the Trolls is not a loading screen. The first time an enemy kills Anna, the game plays a cutscene explaining Sisu, the Finnish idea of endurance the whole survival layer is built around. Understanding what the game is telling you there makes the next attempt easier.

The first death explains the theme

The cutscene was added during the demo period as a deliberate piece of teaching: players were dying and the game had not yet told them what death means in this world. Sisu is the concept it uses — stubborn, quiet endurance in the face of a world that does not negotiate. In practice, that framing tells you something about design intent: death is expected, preparation is the counter, and the world is meant to feel heavier than a standard survival sandbox.

What actually goes wrong

Deaths in this game cluster into a few predictable causes, and each has an answer.

Cause of deathWhy it happensWhat to change
Stat drain in a dungeonArriving without food and waterCarry provisions; the canteen refills inside dungeons
Attrition from creaturesLong fights without healingBring potions, retreat, fight on your terms
DrowningPushing stamina in water or the Deep SeaDo not cross the sea; build bridges
Cold at nightNo fire, no shelter, no planBank fuel, choose a sleep spot before dark
Fighting at low LykkyThe region is hostile on purposeRestore balance, or hunt elsewhere
Group attacksPacks and ambushesBreak line of sight and fight one at a time

Recovering without losing the evening

Because there is a save system in the full game and Steam Cloud support, the cost of one death is a session's progress rather than a run. Three habits keep a bad death from becoming a bad night:

  1. Cook before you travel. Leaving food at base while you die hungry is the most common own goal.
  2. Categorise the death before you retry. Stat drain, guardians, water, cold and Lykky all need different fixes.
  3. Change one thing. If you retry the same approach with the same inventory, expect the same result.

What is worth protecting

Anything you carry into the water is at risk, and the game will make you drop a heavy load to survive. Before a crossing or a dungeon, decide what you are willing to lose and move the rest to storage. Losing an evening of gathered wood is annoying; losing the only copy of a Portal Page is not something you can shrug off.
