Survival needs in Among the Trolls
Four needs run at once. Eat and drink at half meters rather than empty ones, counter cold with fire or shelter, and watch Lykky before blaming a bad fight.

Among the Trolls runs four needs at once — hunger, thirst, sleep and temperature — and ties all four to a fifth value, Lykky, the balance of the region's energies. Managing the first four keeps Anna upright; the fifth decides how hard the world pushes back while you do it.
The four needs and how they actually behave
| Need | What drains it | What refills it | Early answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunger | Time, sprinting, combat, cold | Cooked meals, foraged food | Campfire cooking, deer hunting |
| Thirst | Time, exertion, heat | Water carried in the canteen | Filled canteen, refilled in dungeons after the demo-era fixes |
| Sleep | Staying awake through the night cycle | Sleeping | Shelter and a safe spot before dark |
| Temperature | Night, weather, water, altitude-like cold pockets | Fire, shelter, warm food | Fire first, walls second |
The needs are not cosmetic. Sleep in particular is driven by the day/night cycle and weather, so a long expedition that ignores the clock ends with Anna exhausted in the dark, which is exactly when the supernatural part of the island gets interested.
Reading Anna, not just the meters
Beyond the HUD, the game reports Anna's state through visual and audio cues. Heavy breathing, a slower walk, and a screen that shifts as she pushes too far are all warnings. Learn them early: they arrive before the meter is empty, and they are the difference between eating in time and collapsing in a fight.
Temperature and the night
Cold is worst at night and in specific places, and the official answer is always the same: fire or shelter. That means fuel gathered during the day, and a plan for where you will sleep before the light goes. Shelters are crafted, not found.
Lykky: the region's temper
Lykky is the balance of energies in the area. When it sits low, the world turns on you in four measurable ways: animals grow more aggressive, resources become scarcer, tools wear out faster, and the atmosphere changes to match. Hunting, respectful use of the forest and the game's own rituals are how you push it back up. Practically, a low-Lykky hour is the wrong time to pick a fight or set out on a long crossing.
Food, water and cooking
- Found food is the floor, not the ceiling. It keeps you alive; it does not keep you strong.
- Cooked meals are the real fuel. Cooking happens by placing items in a cooking spot in the world, and meals burn if you leave them.
- Hunted meat from deer and other game is the most reliable protein once you can shoot straight.
- The canteen carries your drinking water and, since the demo-era balancing pass, it also refills inside the dungeon section rather than forcing you back outside.
A routine that keeps you ahead
- Eat and drink at roughly half meters, not empty ones.
- Cook two meals whenever you light a fire; food that is cooked keeps.
- Bank fuel before dark and set the sleep spot before you need it.
- Check Lykky when the forest starts feeling wrong.
- Never carry so much that falling in water forces you to drop it.
The point of the survival layer is not punishment. The developers describe it as a constant invitation to engage with the world: gather what you need, use resources wisely, and make the right choice at the right time. Playing it that way is also the fastest route to a higher Lykky.
