Tips and the mistakes to avoid
Use the target range behind the cabin for practice, cook food in batches but stay by the fire, bank wood before you need a bridge, and never fight in water.

Most early frustration in Among the Trolls comes from four habits: treating the water like a shortcut, treating food like a chore, treating fights like a numbers game, and ignoring the world's mood. These are the tips that actually move the needle, and the mistakes worth avoiding before they cost you an evening.
Preparation beats bravery
- Use grandfather's target range. It sits behind his cabin and exists so you can practise the bow without spending the arrows you need for real hunting.
- Craft arrows constantly. Arrows come from sticks, sticks come from every forest walk, and running out mid-hunt is a self-inflicted delay.
- Bank wood before you need a bridge. Bridge parts are consumed when you build, and timber is heavy to haul long distances.
- Craft potions before a portal, not after. Dungeons, enemies and bad Lykky are exactly what the brewed potions are for.
- Carry food into dungeons. Dungeon stat drain kills players who arrive with an empty bag.
Fighting, hunting and the honest answer
| Situation | Better answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two or more enemies | Back off, use cover, fight one at a time | Some enemies attack in packs, others ambush |
| A creature you have not fought | Watch its attack pattern first | Every enemy has its own pattern |
| An alerted deer | Crouch and move slowly | They are highly alert; running wastes arrows |
| Enemies near water | Fight on land | Tools do not work in water |
| A fight that feels unfair | Check Lykky and come back | Low Lykky makes the whole region hostile |
The water will kill you politely
Swimming is unnaturally exhausting for Anna. Stamina drains fast, and the open sea is worse than an island lake: push out into the Deep Sea and the world distorts and turns hostile, a boundary you cannot cross without a bridge. Tools are useless while swimming, and if you fall in carrying a heavy load you will have to let it go to survive.
The world's mood is a mechanic
Lykky, the balance of a region's energies, changes how the game behaves. When it drops, animals grow more aggressive, resources become scarcer and tools wear out faster. Hunting respectfully, using what you take, and working with the old rituals pushes it back up. If the forest starts feeling wrong, that is not atmosphere — it is the difficulty dial.
Small habits that add up
- Eat and drink at half meters, not empty ones.
- Stay with the campfire while food cooks; meals burn.
- Set a sleep spot before dark rather than searching for one in the dark.
- Keep the journal open as a checklist; quest steps and recipes both live there.
- Offload materials near your build site instead of carrying everything.
- Learn one dungeon's layout before you try a second.
- Talk to the Crow when it appears. It is the quest giver.
Two things that changed with the demo
The February 2026 demo was a slice, not the game: non-consecutive sections, English only, no save, no adjustable graphics settings, and chests in the forest that handed out crafting recipes. Those chests are demo-exclusive. In the full release the same recipes come from normal progression, so do not go looking for the shortcuts the demo offered.
