Among the Trolls Guide

Grandfather's cabin and the target range

Quick answer

The cabin is abandoned when Anna arrives. Search it and the yard, then use the target range behind the cabin to learn the bow before hunting for real.

A tall ancient tree in the forest near grandfather's cabin

Grandfather's cabin is where Among the Trolls begins and where it keeps sending you back. It sits remote and isolated, deep in the forest of his own island, and Anna arrives expecting him at the dock. Instead the cabin is abandoned, and the search for what happened is the spine of the whole game.

Arriving

Anna travels from the United States to Finland to visit her grandfather in the cabin, and finds it empty. Her brother Jonas is missing too. She has a farewell letter, a heavy hollow in her chest, and a mysterious talking Crow that is unwilling to tell her the whole story.

The story material is precise about the emotional frame: this was the place she spent childhood summers, the place she learned to navigate woods one scraped knee at a time, and the memories now seem faded "as if they were a dream."

The backpack he left behind

Grandfather's own account of the pack is one of the most human passages in the game's material. It held everything needed for two days away from home: to make a fire, build a shelter, cook what nature gave, and carry the special ingredients for the rituals only he knew. It was old, had belonged to his father and perhaps to his ancestors before that, and each generation had added something useful. He would open it and lay a cloth on the ground, arranging each object with care, everything finding its place as if in a mysterious and perfect order. As a child he let Anna watch, always warning her not to touch the Väki box: "not yet, Anna."

He never parted from that backpack. It is strange to think that he set out without it.

Using the cabin as a base

  1. Search thoroughly the first time; early objectives live here.
  2. Keep it as your sleep and storage point until you understand the island's size.
  3. Practise at the range before hunting, then bank arrows before you leave.
  4. Use it as the place you return to when the forest starts feeling wrong.
  5. Read what grandfather left; his notes and belongings carry objectives.
