Islands and exploration in Among the Trolls
Every island shares the same sandy shores dropping into deep water. Reach the smaller ones by bridge, and expect new islands to appear as the story pushes the two worlds together.

The Among the Trolls archipelago is Anna's grandfather's island plus everything around it, including the islands that appear once the two worlds begin to overlap. Exploration is gated by water, wood and the story, and that is the whole structure of the game's map.
The shape of every island
There is one geography lesson in this game and it applies everywhere: islands are home to a variety of environments, but they all share sandy shores that stretch into deep water. That repeated coastline is the design doing its job — it makes the boundary between safe and unsafe unmistakable, and it makes the bridge the natural solution.
What you will find
| Environment | What it holds | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Forest interior | Timber, sticks, deer, portals among the birches | Explore slowly; resources are everywhere |
| Shorelines | Sandy ground, ruins, access to water | Good for orienting; bad for fighting |
| Island lakes | Safer water | Test stamina here, not in the sea |
| Ruins | Old structures, patrolling enemies | Expect company; fight on open ground |
| Newly appeared islands | Creatures of wood and stone, story beats | Bring provisions; these are not starter zones |
| Dungeons | The story's hidden history | Enter through a portal with a Portal Page |
The world grows
One of the game's most distinctive features is that exploration is not a fixed checklist. As the imbalance between the worlds deepens, more islands appear around the archipelago, filled with creatures made of wood and stone. The map is a moving quantity, which is why the honest exploration advice is local knowledge rather than a completion list: learn one island well before you chase the next.
Bridges decide your route
Because the open sea is a hard boundary, bridging is the actual exploration system. Bridges are built from gathered wood, they need maintenance, they can be dismantled, and the magic bridges repair crossings that were broken by something else. That gives you a sequencing tool: build the cheap crossing first, keep the wood banked for the one the story needs, and dismantle the early ones once new routes open.
A sane exploration rhythm
- Walk the shoreline first; it is the cheapest way to learn an island's outline.
- Note where bridges would go before you start felling.
- Explore the interior with a full pack and a sleep plan.
- Leave ruins for when you have a buffer of arrows and potions.
- Only take a portal when you have the matching Portal Page.
- Bring what you find home before pushing further out.
