Among the Trolls Guide

Building and shelter in Among the Trolls

Quick answer

Wood is the base of shelter and bridges, and the game frames cutting trees as give and take: build what you need, dismantle what you do not, and keep the forest on your side.

Building in Among the Trolls starts with a tree and ends with a place to sleep. The game treats wood as a genuinely valuable material rather than background scenery, and the developers frame cutting it as a give-and-take relationship: the forest answers to how you treat it, and Lykky is the number that keeps score.

Cutting wood

Trees are the primary resource, and the work has been built out rather than abstracted. Trunks fall and split into parts, logs can be physically carried, and branches and twigs are collected for crafting and environmental interactions. That means a tree is not an animation you watch — it is a small logistics job.

Practical points:

  • Fell near where you are building. Carrying logs across the island is slow.
  • Take the branches as well. Twigs and branches feed crafting; leaving them wastes the trip.
  • Do not clear-cut a site you intend to live in. The game frames respect for the forest as part of the survival loop, and Lykky responds to it.

Shelter and the cold

Cold is at its worst at night and in specific places, and the official answer is fire or shelter. A working shelter does three jobs: it answers temperature, it gives you a place to sleep through the night cycle, and it becomes a landmark you can return to.

A practical first build is small and near water you trust and wood you have already felled. Storage matters as much as walls once you start banking materials for bridges and tools.

Bridges are buildings

The bridge system is the most ambitious part of building in this game. Bridges are built from gathered wood and use:

  • a ghost placement preview, so you can see the structure before committing
  • smart anchor points, which decide where each part can attach
  • per-piece rotation, so you can build around obstacles
  • a validity check, so you never reach the end of a build only to find the last piece cannot be placed

Bridges also require maintenance and can be dismantled to recover materials. Two variants exist: normal bridges, and magic bridges. Magic bridges are the ones that repair crossings which were broken by something the story explains, and they gate access the same way a locked door would.
