Among the Trolls Guide

Weather, day cycle and cold in Among the Trolls

Quick answer

Sleep is affected by the day/night cycle and weather, cold at night must be answered with fire or shelter, and the forest's animal calls change with the conditions.

A snowy moonlit forest clearing in Among the Trolls

Among the Trolls runs on a day and night cycle, weather that changes how the forest sounds and behaves, and cold that is one of Anna's four survival needs. Reading the sky and the birds is not flavour text; it is information the game gives you for free.

The four needs, in weather terms

Hunger, thirst, sleep and temperature all drain on their own clocks, and weather touches all four. Sleep in particular is affected by the day/night cycle and weather conditions, and cold — especially at night or in certain areas — has one official answer: fire or shelter.

ConditionWhat it changesPractical response
NightColder, darker, sleep pressureShelter and fire, or avoid long travel
Rain and windQuieter birds, colder AnnaMove to shelter, cook while you wait
Clear sunLouder, more active wildlifeBetter time to hunt and explore
SnowCold dominates, visibility dropsBank fuel first, shorten trips
Storms at seaWater becomes worse than usualDo not attempt crossings

Sound tells you what the weather is doing

The sound design is built around the living forest. Each biome is defined by the calls of different animal species, birdsong changes from day to night, and how present the birds are depends on conditions: noisier when it is sunny, quieter when there is strong wind or rain. Silence is used deliberately, and the audio team describes the forest as something that is present and alive rather than threatening on its own.

That gives you a reliable tell: if the birds are loud, the region is behaving. If they are not, either the weather is bad or something has changed.

Cold, fire and the night plan

Cold is the need that kills new players, because it arrives when they are furthest from help. Temperature is worst at night and in specific places, and both answers are things you build: fire, and shelter.

A workable night routine:

  1. Bank fuel during the day, before you need it.
  2. Choose your sleep spot while it is still light.
  3. Cook before sleeping, so you wake to food rather than to a search.
  4. Do not start a crossing or a hunt at dusk; a tired, cold Anna fights and swims worse.

Weather and Lykky

Weather, time and Lykky are separate systems that compound. A low-Lykky night in the rain is the worst version of the game: aggressive animals, scarce resources, faster tool wear, and a cold Anna who cannot see far. On a clear morning with a healthy balance, the same area is generous. When a session feels unfairly hard, check what time it is before you blame the design.
