What is Among the Trolls?
A first-person narrative adventure with survival elements, set on a Finnish archipelago, where the mysteries of Finnish forests and mythology are uncovered. Anna travels from the United States to visit her grandfather in a remote cabin, finds him missing along with her brother, and is drawn into a world where the border between reality and myth is dissolving.
Who makes it?
Developed by AvantGarden Games and published by 505 Pulse, the indie division of 505 Games. The original team, Forbidden Studio, closed, and the project was restarted from scratch in 2024.
When does it come out, and where?
14 October 2026, on Windows PC via Steam. The free demo has been available since 12 February 2026.
Is it Early Access?
No. The studio deliberately skipped Early Access to ship a complete 1.0, saying that an Early Access release would only give players a slice of the story.
Is it first person, and what do I play it with?
First person, built around mouse and keyboard, with partial controller support per the store page.
Does it have multiplayer or co-op?
No. At launch it is a single-player experience. The April 2026 announcement was explicit that the decision prioritises quality over quantity and that expansion would be considered after 1.0 depending on performance and feedback.
Do I need to have played the demo?
No. The demo contained non-consecutive sections of the game and did not run in story order. It is worth playing for the feel of the survival loop, but nothing in the full game assumes it.
Does demo progress carry over?
The demo had no save function, so there was nothing to carry. The full game supports saving and Steam Cloud.
What are Väki and Lykky?
Väki is magic; Lykky is luck, or more precisely the balance of a region's energies. The store page asks you to balance them to survive. Low Lykky makes the world hostile: more aggressive animals, scarcer resources, faster tool wear.
Can I cross the sea?
Not by swimming. Water drains stamina unnaturally fast, tools do not work while swimming, and the Deep Sea distorts the world and turns hostile. Bridges are the intended way to reach other islands.

What languages are supported?
The full game was announced to launch in English, with localisation to be evaluated afterwards. The demo was English only. The official website is available in twelve languages including Finnish, Japanese, Russian and both Chinese scripts, but that is the website, not the game.
Is it scary?
It is atmospheric rather than gory. The developers describe supernatural encounters and creatures of wood and stone rooted in the Kalevala, and the sound design makes the forest feel present and aware. Reviewers describe tension and beauty in equal measure.
